When Should You Book Your Newborn Photographer? | Stafford, VA Newborn Photography
If you're expecting a baby, chances are your to-do list is already a mile long β nursery, car seat, hospital bag, all the things! And somewhere on that list you may be wonderingβ¦ when am I actually supposed to book newborn photos?
The short answer? Earlier than you probably think! Most of my newborn families reserve their session while they're still pregnant, and there's a really good reason for that. Let me walk you through when to book, how we plan around a due date (because babies clearly don't care about our calendars π), and what happens once your little one is finally here.
When Should I Book My Newborn Session?
The best time to book your newborn session is during your second or early third trimester. I typically recommend reaching out somewhere around 20β30 weeks, but if you're already past that point β don't panic! It's always worth checking to see if I still have availability.
When you book, we use your due date to reserve space on my calendar. Once baby makes their big arrival, we'll choose the actual session date. That way there's no stress if your little one decides to come early, late, or right on time.
When Is the Best Time to Photograph a Newborn?
For those sleepy, curled-up newborn photos everyone loves, I generally photograph babies during the first two weeks after birth. They're still extra sleepy, naturally curled up, and usually much easier to settle into those sweet little poses.
But please don't worry if your baby is already a little older! Beautiful newborn photos don't suddenly become impossible after two weeks. Every baby is different, and I'll always work with your baby's needs and comfort during the session.
The biggest thing I want parents to know is that we are never rushing your baby. There's plenty of time built into your session for feeding, changing, snuggling, and soothing whenever it's needed.
What If My Baby Comes Early⦠or Late?
Babies are pretty famous for doing things on their own schedule. π That's exactly why I don't schedule your newborn session for a specific date before your baby arrives.
Your due date gets you on my calendar, and once baby is here, you'll reach out and we'll officially schedule your session. Whether your little one arrives two weeks early, a week late, or surprises everyone somewhere in between, we'll adjust!
This is also why booking while you're still pregnant is so helpful β I already know you're coming and have space set aside for you.
What Is a Newborn Session Like?
Honestly? Newborn sessions are meant to be EASY for you. You've just had a baby β the last thing I want you worrying about is showing up with a Pinterest board, a suitcase full of props, and a perfectly cooperative newborn. π
When you arrive at my Stafford studio, I have everything we need for baby β wraps, blankets, outfits, props, headbands, bonnets and plenty of options to create a session that feels like you. We'll talk about colors and styles you love, and I'll take it from there.
Your job is basically to relax, love on your baby, and maybe enjoy a few quiet minutes while I do my thing. π€
Are Parents & Siblings Included?
Absolutely! Your newborn may be the star of the show, but I love including parents and siblings too. Those first family photos are some of my favorites because everyone changes so quickly during that first year β not just baby.
And please don't stress about feeling completely photo-ready right after having a baby. I'll guide you through posing and keep everything simple and comfortable. The goal isn't perfection β it's capturing your family exactly as you are in this brand-new season.
Ready to Get Your Newborn Session on the Calendar?
If you're expecting and looking for a newborn photographer in Stafford, Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, or the surrounding Northern Virginia area, I'd love to photograph this sweet season for your family.
The best time to reach out is before baby arrives so we have plenty of time to plan everything together β but if your little one is already here, reach out anyway! I may still have room on my calendar.
